teacher spotlight: Meet Eisha
I discovered yoga in 2016, after I joined a gym and decided to try a class. The teacher, Abi, was a Black woman with locs, and I was instantly drawn to her energy. She spoke in a way that felt so soft yet so powerful - her words stuck with me long after class ended. I found practicing so hard, but something about it kept me coming back.
In 2018, my whole world changed. My brother was diagnosed with lymphoma, and suddenly, everything else seemed irrelevant. It made me stop and question what I was doing with my life. He asked what I would like to do and I told him that I’d like to become a yoga teacher. As a gift, he paid for my first teacher training and this changed everything. I went in thinking it would be just for me - a distraction from what my brother was going through, but I came out knowing I had to share this practice with others. My brother was my first student. Teaching became my purpose and I’ve never looked back.
The Move Into Teaching
I found my own practice so hard as I’m not naturally flexible. Training in Ashtanga taught me discipline and with this, I began to see progress. I threw myself in the deep end, teaching as much as I could straight after qualifying. The more I taught, the more I grew - not just as a teacher, but as a person. It also helped me through my darkest time, after my brother passed in 2021. My mat has given me great comfort. Now, 7 years in, I practice with other teachers as much as I can and love learning new things.
Yoga has taken me around the world, given me beautiful friendships, and a deeper understanding of myself. I’m so excited to see what the future holds!
My Classes & What Matters Most to Me
My classes are fun, dynamic, and welcoming - a space where you can challenge yourself, whilst also feeling supported. I’ll always be your biggest cheerleader, offering options so the practice feels good in your body. It’s important for me to make sessions accessible, so I’m great at adapting my teaching style to meet the needs of others. I’m trained to teach a variety of styles, my favourite is Rocket.
Music has always been a big part of my life, so I love sharing this passion during classes. You might hear Cleo Sol during Savasana or be moving to the beat of African amapiano during Rocket. Don’t hesitate to ask me at the end of class for the titles/artists.
I create community and hold space for others. I’m the kind of teacher that always arrives early to chat with you, check-in, and catch up on the latest good read or Netflix show.
My favourite things to do is yoga (of course) travel, dance and eat yummy food! My brother & I loved to travel together, so I continue to do so in his honour. My favourite trips have been exploring Africa, Asia & South America. I also love a good book!
Yoga has taught me so much about myself. I continue to grow, it has such a positive impact on my mental health. It has opened me up to endless meaningful encounters with others.
Retreats & My Love for Africa
I’ve been running my own retreats for a few years now, in the UK and The Gambia. One of my favourite things about being a teacher is hosting, especially in Africa. There’s nothing quite like it! I love sharing its beauty, sunshine, energy and culture with others. Last year’s Ghana retreat with Pana was pure magic! I can’t wait to go back to create more beautiful memories. There’s nothing like being surrounded by people of color, moving together, exploring history, soaking up the sunshine and eating the most incredible food. It’s so special.
My mother was born in Kenya, her father was Indian. My father was born in Jamaica. I experienced Indian culture whilst growing up, but it wasn’t until my adult years did I discovered yoga. I loved visiting Kenya with Pana in January. I haven’t been since I was a child. Seeing women who looked like my family members and hearing Swahili made me feel at home.
